Schools taking part in I’m an Engineer June 2016

I’m an Engineer, Get me out of here is back! In June students at over 70 schools will be interacting with 25 engineers across 5 different zones.

Between 13th – 24th June school students will put the scientists through their paces in fast-paced live chats and probing questions on everything from health and the environment, to aerospace and water.

For the latest news and announcements about the event, find us on Twitter, @iaegmooh, and follow the hashtag, #IAEUK.

Let’s meet the engineers and schools taking part…

The Engineers

Environment

Mark Gowan | Colas Ltd

I am tasked with bringing and developing new ideas and inventions into workable solutions – I am currently working on a project which involves installing solar panels as the road surface.

Stephen Richardson | Sainsbury’s Supermarkets and University of Reading

Every year supermarkets open enough new stores to fill about 60 football pitches; I’m helping Sainsbury’s to make theirs more environmentally friendly.

Jeni Spragg | PhD Student, University of Leeds

I look at the energy systems of the future, in particular how we can use biological sources in creative ways to make sustainable power and products.

Ashwanth Vijay | Technip UK

I am a Hydrographic Survey Engineer who looks into the ocean to see what the sea floor looks like, and to ensure all underwater construction is taking place where it is supposed to and to the correct specifications.

Natalie Wride | PhD Student, University of Warwick

I’m researching how the ground behaves when high speed trains pass over it, to make sure trains can run at speeds of over 200 miles per hour safely.

Krishnaa Mahbubani | Postdoctoral, University of Cambridge

I freeze blood – and now I am trying to dry blood, so you can store it without a refrigerator.

Laura O’Shea | Canterbury of New Zealand (Pentland Group Plc)

I find ways to help athletes boost their performance by developing new sports equipment that might allow them to run faster, jump higher or be stronger.

Rebecca Pullon | PhD Student, University of Oxford

I provide doctors with mobile phones and tablets to help them monitor patients, particularly during pregnancy when several things could go wrong!

Simon Willocks | MedImmune

I am Head of Engineering for a Biotech Manufacturing site, leading a team of Engineers who proactively support both the facility services and process manufacturing equipment, ensuring safety, compliance and value.

Matthew Hobbs | PhD Student, Cranfield University

Pesticides are for plants, not for people.  I study a chemical reaction designed to destroy pesticides found in water so that it’s safe for people to drink.

Vinita Khiroya | MAATS Tech

I create virtual simulations of equipment on huge construction vessels to see if it will survive real world conditions like stormy seas and try and strengthen them if they fail.

Joe Shuttleworth | PhD Student, University of Exeter

I use computers to create an imaginary world where I can look at how water moves around, in this world I can look at how we can best protect ourselves from floods.

Maurice Stokes | MWH Treatment Ltd

I am a civil engineer responsible for building water tanks you could fit the school hall in, pipes you could ride a bike down with equipment that could move or lift a house – to ensure every drop of our water is clean and safe!
