June 2016 Zones

I’m an Engineer, Get me out of here will run for two weeks from Monday 13th to Friday 24th June 2016. With 5 different zones, we’re looking for 25 engineers and have space for more than 1,700 students. Here is a list of the zones we will be running, or if you want to skip straight to the application, teachers register here: imanengineer.org.uk/teacher-registration, engineers apply here: imanengineer.org.uk/engineer-apply. Aerospace Zone Since people first looked at the beauty of flying birds and got a serious case of FOMO, we have always dreamt of flight. Then it actually happened and we got Ryanair. But the dream of modern air travel, and space travel, isn’t over yet. In the Aerospace Zone there could be engineers improving the engines of aeroplanes, designing rockets and rovers to head to Mars, or seeing how this technology could be used in other fields. If you want to explore why birds bats and … Continue reading

The questions are flooding in from students in this March’s round of I’m an Engineer, Get me out of here! Questions on everything from how many crisps we produce a year (it’s a lot!), to a world without engineers. Why do we need computer models of jet engines? Intelligent questions being asked at #IAEUK! — Priyanka Dhopade, engineer If this sounds up your street, well, we have some great news… The next I’m an Engineer event will run from the 13th to the 24th June 2016, and applications are open now! Engineers apply by Sunday 1st May at: imanengineer.org.uk/engineer-apply Teachers register by Sunday 1st May at: imanengineer.org.uk/teachers — After registering, teachers will receive an email asking which zone they would like to take part in. Respond to this email to complete registration for the June activity. Teachers who are already signed up for our activities will receive an email in early April about registering for the … Continue reading

I’m an Engineer March 2016: Who’s taking part?

I’m an Engineer, Get me out of here is back! In March students at nearly 50 schools will be interacting with 25 engineers across 5 different zones during this year’s British Science Week. Between 7th–18th March school students will put the scientists through their paces in fast-paced live chats and probing questions on everything from surgery and food, to fuel and robotics. For the latest news and announcements about the event, find us on Twitter, @iaegmooh, and follow the hashtag, #IAEUK. Let’s meet the engineers and schools taking part in… Food Zone This zone is funded by the Wellcome Trust. The Engineers Tom Bullock | Pepsico International (Walkers Snack Foods) I design tasty new snack foods like crisps and crackers; I look at what ingredients, recipes and machines we need to make them in a big factory! Ross Miller | Mondelez International I look at the science and processes that help make millions of chocolate treats around … Continue reading

How is food produced, stored, and delivered to our tables? Who is making the future of food more sustainable? This zone will include engineers keeping us fed and those working on a recipe for a healthier future. The Food Zone is funded by the Wellcome Trust. November 2015 Student Winners

After every event we ask the engineers and moderators to select the students who stood out for them; the students they thought asked the best questions, or engaged most in the live chats. Well done to all of the student winners, and everyone who took part. There were so many interesting questions, and comments, but there could only be one winner in each zone. So, for fantastic engagement during the event, for posting brilliant questions and comments, the student winners below will each receive a certificate and a gift voucher. Energy Zone Winner: OttilieHS, King James’s School Production Zone Winner: Archimedes, Chosen Hill School After taking part in I’m an Engineer, we ask the students to answer a few questions to help us gauge their attitudes towards engineering and science. We randomly choose one student who filled in the questions to win a voucher. That student is 449ened, Cambourne Village College.

Take part in free engineering outreach this March!

Students in the November I’m an Engineer event asked questions on everything from robots to foods that aren’t solid or liquid, to ultra fast charging phones. We also got some great comments from teachers and engineers: “Thanks a lot for all of your help and answering my questions! This has helped me a lot for school GCSE option choices!” – Hannah, student “It was great fun and bit tense getting into work in the morning and finding a new pile of questions, knowing my answers could win or lose me votes!” – Stevie, engineer If you want to be a part of this, we have great news: we are running I’m an Engineer again in March, during British Science Week! The next I’m an Engineer, Get me out of here event will run from the 7th to the 18th March 2016! Teachers register by Sunday 24th January at: imanengineer.org.uk/teachers Engineers apply by Sunday 24th January at: imanengineer.org.uk/engineer-apply Teachers will get an email in January asking them to choose their … Continue reading

How does I’m an Engineer affect students understanding of engineering?

We know that I’m an Engineer gets students interested in engineering  and inspired to become engineers themselves.  However, one of the key objectives of the project is to smash engineering stereotypes; that the students learn that engineering is not just about car mechanism, spanners and hard hats. Measuring the students’ change in understanding of engineering has been difficult: closed questions tend not to work when assessing this, as they can be very leading. We decided to ask students to evaluate their own learning. Of course, this has its own limitations, but so far it is the best method we have found. We asked students for their degree of agreement on whether since taking part in I’m an Engineer, they know more about different aspects of being an engineer. Responses from 131 students told us that taking part in I’m an Engineer helps them to improve their understanding of what engineering is and what … Continue reading
