What’s happened so far in I’m an Engineer this March

Students and engineers in March’s I’m an Engineer are in the middle of discussing everything from the skills needed to be an engineer, to robots as the ideal housemates, to bonding over baking, to 3D printing a moon base. After the first seven days, there’s been: 1,231 school students logging in to three zones:  Artificial Body, Robotics, Ampere 612 questions sent to the 18 engineers by students 526 votes cast by the students to support their favourite engineers And that’s not to mention the almost uncountable levels of conversation in the 26 live chats that have taken place. See all the engineers and schools taking part here. If all this has got you motivated for some engineering engagement you can get yourself involved in the next I’m an Engineer, taking place 12th–23rd June 2017 using the buttons below: This March, there’s still much more to come. From 3 pm on Tuesday the pressure cranks up as the first engineer is evicted from each zone, with more following each day … Continue reading

I’m an Engineer March 2017: Who’s taking part?

I’m an Engineer, Get me out of here is back! In March students at nearly 50 schools will be interacting with engineers across 3 different zones. Between 6th – 17th March school students will put the engineers through their paces in fast-paced live chats and probing questions on everything from artificial limbs, to giant robots and 3D printing. For the latest news and announcements about the event, find us on Twitter, @iaegmooh, and follow the hashtag, #IAEUK. Let’s meet the engineers and schools taking part… Artificial Body Zone This zone is funded by Wellcome. The Engineers Daniel Morse | PhD Student, Cardiff University I look at how fungi and bacteria from the mouth interact and cause infections, how the cells in the mouth respond, and infect my own home-grown living 3D model of the roof of the mouth (which looks pretty cool under the microscope!). Ana Gallego | Materials Engineer, Blatchford I make artificial legs for amputees. Zach Welshman | PhD Student, University of Leeds I use … Continue reading

March 2017 Zones

I’m an Engineer, Get me out of here will run for two weeks from Monday 6th to Friday 17th March 2017, during British Science Week. We will be running two themed zones, and one general engineering zone suitable for any kind of engineer. Read about them below, or if you want to jump straight to the application, teachers apply here: imanengineer.org.uk/teacher-registration, and engineers here: imanengineer.org.uk/engineer-apply. Artificial Body Zone When a body part is damaged it can be possible to repair or replace it. Inventive humans have been crafting artificial body parts since at least the days of Ancient Egypt! For most of our history the design and materials used to make body parts stayed much the same. Since the 20th century, however, engineers have greatly increased the variety and effectiveness of artificial body parts, using new materials and smarter design. Engineers in this zone might be trying to grow new organs using stem cells, designing bionic arms that … Continue reading

Student winners – November 2016

After every event we ask the engineers and moderators to select the students who stood out for them; the students they thought asked the best questions, or engaged most in the live chats. Well done to all of the student winners, and everyone who took part. There were so many interesting questions, and comments, but there could only be one winner in each zone. So, for fantastic engagement during the event, for posting brilliant questions and comments, the student winners below will each receive a certificate and a gift voucher. Apprentice Zone Winner: sharan234, The Heathland School Diagnosis Zone Winner: Emily Extream, Gomer Junior School Motor Zone Winner: IzzyK, Herne Bay High School Space Zone Winner: 852spag23, Lathom Junior School After taking part in I’m an Engineer, we ask the students to answer a few questions to help us gauge their attitudes towards engineering and science. We randomly choose one student who filled in the questions to win … Continue reading
