💬 A guide to… Chat

ℹ️ What is Chat?

The live Chat is a 30-minute text-based opportunity for students to connect with a diverse range of scientists.

💭 How does Chat work?

  • Live Chats can be booked in by the class teacher, at a time that suits them.
  • Teachers can prepare for the Chat by looking at the teacher guidance and lesson plans.
  • Students can see which scientists have signed up to take part from their Dashboard, or the gallery.
  • Chats last 30 minutes.
  • During the Chat, students are invited to ask questions and engage in conversations with the group of scientists taking part in the Chat.
  • Chats are facilitated by DBS-checked moderators.

❓ Why is Chat so important?

  • I’m a Scientist supports students’ science capital.
    • Live Chats give them more awareness of the diversity of, nature of, and routes into, STEM jobs.
    • Students see scientists as normal people with hobbies, interests, pets and families like them. Science becomes more relatable.
  • The text-based live Chats mean that all students have an equal chance of having their question answered.
  • During live Chats, students can demonstrate that they know how to use the internet safely with appropriate behaviour. See the learning outcomes ❯

It helps [to see] students in a different light. Some who are normally very quiet in school became very active in the chat.
