About Me:
I live with my wife and our two boys in Cardross, in Scotland, near the Firth of Clyde and not far from Loch Lomond. I enjoy listening to true crime, NFL, 40K and weird stuff podcasts and listening to audiobooks. When I can I like to paint Warhammer 40k, read sci-fi and fantasy and be out on our seashore. Otherwise just spend time doing things with our boys! I volunteer with our community seashore group and help undertake marine biodiversity surveys. I am a qualified diver though mainly snorkel now.

I was born in Japan, somewhere between mountains and the sea, and came to the UK when I was 2.5yo. I grew up with quite a lot of Japanese influenced culture, especially the food and I love nori. I went to school in St.Albans, then went to uni in Bangor, North Wales, where I studied Marine Biology and Zoology. I then went to University of Aberdeen to study for my PhD in Zoology all about parasitic copepods. My passion for marine biology started when I was at primary school after going to an aquarium and seeing a dogfish. I fell for sharks and rays and that is what I wanted to study. But got side tracked by parasites and copepods. After Aberdeen (where I met my wife), we moved to Edinburgh. I then took a job on Easdale Island to gain experience of working on boats. Seaweed came about because Loch Fyne Seafood were looking for more supplies of it. So I ended up living next to the sea and working with that which I enjoy to eat, seaweed. I left Easdale when my wife moved back up to Scotland from London and moved to Cardross. I have started or co-founded three companies. My job is kind of an extension of my passion and my interests. I love being out on the seashore and looking for wee beasties. I enjoy bird watching as well. However I have been a collector of Warhammer 40k for decades now and have three armies. I enjoy painting them and doing the odd conversion. I enjoy playing the odd game and have recently got into D&D. I play the barritone horn. My musical taste is varied though I generally lean towards rock and heavy/symphonic/power metal though anything synthy or electronic I will listen to. My favourite bands are Muse, Paradise Lost, Nightwish and Chvrches. I do enjoy pop, in particular Lady Gaga and Chappell Roan.
I have two sons who are a riot.

My Work:
I am currently the Seaweed Lead at SeaGen, a company I originally co-founded but became the scientific founder. I work on cultivating edible or commercially important seaweed species and optimising their cultivation. I also provide support on our biodiversity monitoring effors around seaweed farms.
-
My Typical Day:
I am usually woken up by one of our sons, have breakfast and get us all ready for the day. I drive to work where I work on my seaweed tanks, carrying out tests. I make myself coffee throughout the day and have a light lunch before continuing developing the seaweed farming and looking at my results. I leave at 4pm to pick up the boys from nursery and after school club.

What I'd do with the prize money:
I would use the money to help support our community seashore biodiversity group with equipment to help us bring the seashore to people. We certainly need more capability to be able to show people what is under the water and a field sterescope with a screen would go a long way to help do this. A few nets and a hand drawn shallow water plankton trawl net would be useful to be able to collect seashore samples and bring them back for people. At the moment we are limited to when the tide is out however being able to run things when the tide is in would be wonderful.

Education:
I went to South Hill Primary in Hemel Hempstead then when we moved to St Albans I went to Prae Wood primary school. For secondary/high school I went to Verulam School. This was a state school. After school I went to Bangor University in North Wales and studied a joint honours BSc in Marine Biology and Zoology. I then went and studied my PhD in Zoology at Aberdeen University.
