About Me:
I love everything from reading to rock climbing, musicals to mystery movies, and ballet to baking.

When I’m not science-ing, I like to keep an active and varied lifestyle through running, hiking, climbing, swimming and dancing. Of course, this is followed by a cosy reading session with a cup of tea. At university, there are clubs or ‘societies’ of practically anything you can think of and loads of opportunities to have a big social life. I often have movie nights, dinners and other outings with friends after work or at the weekends.

My Work:
I’m a research student at Oxford University looking at the science of wind turbine energy production. I’m passionate about sustainability, renewable energy and caring for people and the environment.

I use a combination of maths, physics and computing (writing code) to solve problems. Currently, my work involves how climate change can affect the energy production of wind turbines. I still apply many of the principles I learnt in my GCSE maths and physics when solving research questions. My work is very exciting because I am working on things that haven’t yet been figured out, so I get to make new contributions to science and be a discoverer.
-
My Typical Day:
Reading academic journals, doing maths, having fun!

My typical day involves a lot of coding, solving equations and reading work by other physicists / mathematicians / engineers. I try to keep up to date with renewable energy news and the different techniques other people are applying to solve problems. Usually, we have lunch all together as a research group of about 20 people and on Fridays we go out for ‘Fun Lunch Friday’. As a research student, my work schedule is very flexible and I often try to work the way that suits me best.

What I'd do with the prize money:
I’d love to organise for the school I worked with to come to Oxford for the day and see the University facilities and be able to speak to other students.
-
Education:
I went to a state (normal) school in the Midlands, England and took A-levels at the same sixth form. I had to work hard because it wasn’t the best school but I didn’t want to let that stop me. From there, I got into Durham University to do maths with physics and got good marks in my degree. And now I’m studying for my PhD at Oxford University.
-
Qualifications:
I got 10 GCSEs when I was 15 and then 4 A-levels during sixth form. After that, I got a master’s degree as a ‘master of science’ from Durham University. And now I am studying for a PhD at Oxford.
-
Work History:
I worked with microplastics in a lab on a beach where I looked for tiny pieces of plastic in samples collected from Ocean water near Antarctica using a microscope. I also worked as a maths tutor in a secondary school in my local area teaching GCSE maths.
-
Current Job:
DPhil (PhD) student working on wind turbine aerodynamics and energy production
-
Employer:
University of Oxford, EPSRC
