I am a problem solver and enjoy patterns and numbers. In my day to day life this looks like following knitting patterns, doing crosswords and sudokus and playing the trombone in a brass band.

My Work:

I design foundations for buildings bridges and other structure. I take information about what is already in the ground and work out how big and long the new foundations should be.

I review the geology and determine parameters for the soil and rock. I work with the structural engineers who design the building to make sure that the foundations meet their requirements but are not over designed.
My Typical Day:

I wake up, get ready and drive to the office. I review any emails from projects where I have done the foundation design or I may start to review any new projects that need design work. I catch up with my team members to see what they are working on and if I can help solve any problems that I may have experienced before.

Sometimes I go and visit the construction sites to see that my designs are being installed correctly. I take all my high viz clothes and steel toe cap boots. My company wears orange high viz rather than yellow.

I work as a Senior Design Engineer with Cementation Skanska. I started with this company straight from university as a graduate engineer and then joined the in house design team as a design engineer.
