About Me:
I live in London. I’m a medical researcher at a University where I use AI to study diseases of the eye. In my free time I like to make ceramic pottery, do painting, and see live music!

I use Artificial Intelligence to understand more about diseases of the human eye. I have been studying this for four years for a PhD.
Outside of work I like to make ceramic pottery. I do this at a studio in London. Sometimes I make vases, pots, cups, sculptures that have a Science theme.
I really like being creative- I am glad that I didn’t have to give this up just because I went down a Science route. I am about to start a course where I will learn how to make jewellery.

My Work:
I use artificial intelligence to help doctors treat diseases of the eye. I also use Physics to create artificial models of the eye.

It takes a long time for eye doctors to check images of the eye for disease. This means that they have less time with their patients. Doctors want to use artificial intelligence to help them check images of the eye faster. I use artificial intelligence to do a few different things. I use it to automatically select areas in an image that contain blood vessels. I use it to check how different areas of the eye have changed after a patient is treated. I use it to create fake images of the eye.
I also use Physics to create artificial models of the eye. I have found it a really rewarding area to work in! There is a lot of interesting work happening. I hope that the work will improve patient treatment.

My Typical Day:
I wake up and head into work. I usually have coffee with the other researchers. The rest of my working day is taken up by coding, meetings, and writing up research.

I wake up at 8AM, I have a coffee straight away! I eat breakfast and then I get the London Underground into work. I have another coffee with the other researchers and we have a chat. The other researchers have a range of backgrounds, such as Cancer doctor, Surgeon, Physicist, Engineer, and Biologist. I then do some coding at my computer for a few hours and try to fix any bugs.
I often have meetings with a collaborator in Germany. Then I take a call from my collaborator at the eye hospital.
We have lunch as a group then I write up my experiments. Then I go home and go for a cycle ride around the park.

What I'd do with the prize money:
I want to make an exhibition that describes Science and Artificial Intelligence through ceramics pottery. I want to hold classes on making Science based sculptures using clay. I think it would be an interesting way to learn 🙂
-

I went to the Langton Girls school in Canterbury. I then went to University of Sussex to study Neuroscience with Cognitive Science. After this I went to University College London to study Translational Neurology. Then I worked as a research assistant before starting my PhD in AI in medical imaging
