I’m an Engineer, Get me out of here will run for two weeks from Monday 12th to Friday 23rd June 2017, connecting school students with engineers across the UK.
We will be running a themed zone and a general engineering zone suitable for any kind of engineer.
Read about them below, or head straight to the application form:

Smart Materials Zone
What if your phone screen knew how to fix itself? Smart materials are designed so they they will react to changes in their environment, such as temperature, light, pressure or moisture. There is a huge range of smart materials offering different properties that can be changed, such as thermochromic materials – which change colour as the temperature changes. These are used for everything from colour changing mugs, to safety products like food packaging to show you when your food is at the right temperature. Some materials, like e-textiles, you can even wear and use to convert solar energy into power.
Engineers in this zone might be making new fabrics that adapt to your temperature, or new smart materials to help with health applications, such as shape memory stents which expand on heating to allow more blood flow. Or they could be working with damage sensing materials that can tell us when a structure is beginning to need repair or even repair themselves, handy the next time you drop your phone.
The Smart Materials Zone is funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering
General Engineering Zone
The Candela Zone is a general engineering zone and will feature engineers from a range of different areas. We welcome any type of engineer to apply for these zones; the more diverse the better.
