With the June event fast approaching, we can now announce the schools and scientists who’ll be taking part from 17th – 28th. We’re running the Detection Zone, funded by the STFC.
Schools
There are 19 schools involved and after a great event in March we’re hoping they’ll get just as much out of it as the classes did last time. Here’s what some teachers in the March event told us afterwards:
“The class really engaged and were more aware of the different aspects encompassed by ‘engineering’ and how maths related to that”
“Really, really enjoyed it – I’ve done a follow up of giving them a week to ‘constructively daydream’ and come up with an idea or invention – even if it would be impossible to produce it yet. I’m really impressed by their ideas – plus they’ve signed contracts giving me 10% of future income from their inventions. Dragons Den, here we come!!”
Engineers
We’ve got 5 more engineers lined up for June who we hope will have just as much fun taking part as the engineers in March did. We had some great feedback after the last event:
“In comparison to other STEM events, it was a lot less hassle! Being online meant it was easier to participate in and gave everyone a chance to ask the questions they wanted.”
“It seemed like the kids weren’t as ‘intimidated’ as they are when you meet them in person; which meant that there was a good flow of questions.”

The Engineers
Samer Kilani | CERN | Building a machine that would help recreate the BIG BANG! |
Gary Boorman | Royal Holloway | I work in the field of Accelerator Diagnostics – using advanced detectors to monitor and control particle beams. |
Dan Weatherill | The Open University | I am a detector physicist – I work on designing electronic sensors and detectors which are used in spacecraft and medical facilities, for example the X-ray Cameras in outer space telescopes. |
Ben Drumm | STFC | I am responsible for designing hardware for a particle accelerator. |
Amanda Lewin | Parker Wilson Consulting | Design of fire detection and alarm systems |
