DAY 7: From faulty equipment to international travel

Day 7 and we’re sad to see Dan leave the competition – but he’s still welcome to join us in more live chats! The next eviction will be at 3pm tomorrow, so make sure you keep voting!

Today’s highlights:

We learnt what can go wrong with a particle accelerator:

synjyboy : what faults can go wrong with particle accelerators?

bendrumm : with so MANY bits of equipment, there’s a lot that can go wrong! Example: we had a water leak on one of our big magnet, which leaked on and EVEN BIGGER magnet below and caused it to set on fire :s

garyboorman : Particle accelerators are very complicated – when the beam goes off it’s normal direction it can cause a shower of radiation.

  • Some of the benefits of working as an engineer:

fintasy : do you get to travel in your job?

samerkilani : Yes I do travel quite alot for meetings and conferences

bendrumm : yeas, I’ve been lucky – I’ve gone to New York, Spain, France several times and Barbados through a work sports club

04aw01 : do you meet a lot of new people in your job

bendrumm : YES! I reckon I’ve probably met at least 100 people on site through my work (although I do a lot of sports/social stuff…)

samerkilani : CERN has more than 10,000 people coming from all over world. The ATLAS collaboration by itself has people from almost every continent in the world. So yes I meet a lot of people

  • And some great questions in ASK too, from work to personal…

How would you explain what an engineer does in a tweet of 140 words?

What is the coolest thing you’ve ever made?

What’s the best prank you have ever pulled?

What is your motivation in life?
