March 2017 Zones

I’m an Engineer, Get me out of here will run for two weeks from Monday 6th to Friday 17th March 2017, during British Science Week.

We will be running two themed zones, and one general engineering zone suitable for any kind of engineer.

Read about them below, or if you want to jump straight to the application, teachers apply here: imanengineer.org.uk/teacher-registration, and engineers here: imanengineer.org.uk/engineer-apply.

Artificial Body Zone

When a body part is damaged it can be possible to repair or replace it. Inventive humans have been crafting artificial body parts since at least the days of Ancient Egypt! For most of our history the design and materials used to make body parts stayed much the same. Since the 20th century, however, engineers have greatly increased the variety and effectiveness of artificial body parts, using new materials and smarter design. Engineers in this zone might be trying to grow new organs using stem cells, designing bionic arms that can outperform a natural one, or even developing whole exoskeletons that restore mobility to paralysed people.

Robotics Zone

“It’s 2017, where’s my robot butler?!” Not far off, is the likely answer (they just can’t quite get the right tea to milk ratio yet). But in what other ways can robotics change our lives? Can robots care for the elderly? Is it possible for them to save lives in disaster zones? Will autonomous cars make driving tests pointless? And, at this point, do they technically own Mars? This zone will feature engineers from this rapidly expanding field ready to answer your questions, although they’re not allowed to let a robot stand in for them. Yet.

The Robotics Zone is funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering

General Engineering Zone

The Ampere Zone is a general engineering zone and will take engineers from a range of different areas. We welcome any type of engineer to apply for these zones; the more diverse the better.

The Ampere Zone is funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering

Apply now to take part!

Teachers

Apply before Monday 23rd January. We’ll send an email out soon after you sign up asking which zones and how many classes you would like to bring online.

Engineers

Apply before Monday 30th January. Take a look at this page for our advice on your application!

UKThis March we’ll also be running 8 zones in I’m a Scientist. Click here for more information.
